MY LITTLE BUTTERFLY

11 March 2010

I've been feeling the fluttering sensations in my uterus since month two and it's been a lovely reassurance knowing baby is growing strong inside me. However, this morning baby's movements grew much stronger. I actually felt my uterus tense as baby moved inside, with the butterfly flutterings feeling more like an almost kick. Baby is the size of an apple and our last sonogram showed baby with ten fingers and ten toes, beautiful limbs, and a huge head so I know I didn't imagine his movement!

And before you, dear readers, get all too excited that Gian's going to have a baby brother, I'm calling baby a he because my intuition believes baby to be a boy. Allan and I agreed to be surprised again so we won't know baby's sex until he pops out. Christine is hoping I'm having a little girl so Maile has a playmate but she, too, suspects I'm having a boy. Honestly, I don't really care what baby is as long as baby is born healthy, intelligent, and loves God. Well, the loving God part is my responsibility and I've already been working on that!

I'm still nauseated throughout the day; some days are worse than others but for the most part the nausea has been a standard in my pregnancy. It's been hard - as Christine notes when I come to the house looking all exhausted and emotional - because Gian's pregnancy was smooth sailing, but maybe my mama is right: Gian was an easy pregnancy but challenging baby; baby 02 is a hard pregnancy but will produce an easy baby. Let's hope you're right, mama.

In other news, keep praying for dad. He's trying to see if he can fly home in two weeks. Mama paid for the medical insurance and if Dr. Bikdeli, dad's primary care doctor at Kaiser, approves his condition, mama and dad will have a free upgrade to first class so he can recline during the entire flight. Mama's on a tight budget and cannot afford to upgrade out of her pocket, so family, please pray that God will answer our prayers with a Yes. However, please pray that no matter what happens it will be HIS WILL that is carried out. God knows what's best and we must follow Him.

And because posts are way more fun with photos, here's a video Gian made this morning. He's currently obsessed with taking Photobooth pictures and videos... it's cute. I hope you like them, Chelsey and Celeste. Ha!

BAREFOOT CONTESSA STRIKES AGAIN!

09 March 2010

Yesterday I attempted to make jam, orange marmalade to be exact, for the first time in my life. I've always wanted to preserve fruit because, well, looking at a pantry full of Kerr's Mason jars looks pretty awesome. And since we'll be canning and preserving a lot when our orchard and garden begins producing fruit I thought now would be a good time to see if I could do it.

The process is easy but tedious. It calls for a lot of stirring, heating, cleaning, heating again, and cooling. But the end product is - as I always imagined - a beautiful sight! I have twelve little 4oz jars full of marmalade; some will be going to my sisters while others will be going to other family and friends. Because the marmalade was made for my class presentation today I've decided to bring the big boy (a whole 8oz of marmalade goodness!) to class. Hopefully my professors, classmates, and partner-in-crime will enjoy homemade scones (I'll be making that this morning) and marmalade. Oooh, my mouth is watering just thinking about it!

My camera is at my parents' house so I have to resort to Photobooth to take pictures of my jam. Ha!

UPDATE:
Scones turned out beautiful with a golden crust while flaky on the inside. Butter + marmalade + scone = heaven! Gian was my little sous chef; he used the bisquit cutter to cut out the scones. Thanks, my sweet little guy!
